I echo what other reviewers said. We've just got back from Cancun, and the book repeatedly failed us with outdated information. It appears that Forod's did little else than changing the year on the cover from the last edition. A few concrete examples:1. The book says that Yucatan uses Central time. In fact, Yucatan is divided to 3 states, and one of them (Quintana Roo, the one containing Cancun and the Riviera Maya) moved to Eastern Time Zone in Feb 2015. This created a lot of confusion for us when we traveled across state lines.2. The book barely mentions the amazing - and free! - night show in Chichen Itza. It took us a lot of trial and error to find the details (online we found only misleading information, like it being closed or pricy or outdated.) In fact, the lightshow was completely redone for 2015, but requires a (free) reservation you can only book online. Your hotel can do it for you. Arrive the night before by 4-5pm, have them book it for you, be there by 6:30pm for the show at 7pm, and go to Chichen Itza first thing the following day, to avoid the buses from Cancun.3. The book information about ferries to Isla Mojeres is wrong - there are ferries from the hotel zone as well, not just from Puerto Juarez4. The book doesn't give good directions to our most favorite attraction on the Riviera Maya - Cenote Aktun Chen (check Trip Adviser for details.)And then the usual list of restaurants and clubs that are already closed, etc.Find a better book.
I bought this for my Cancun/Riveria Maya trip back in May. I thought it was a very helpful guide in term of customs, what to tip, Spanish phrases you may need to use. There were a lot of good details that came in handy. I think I impressed my boyfriend some when we made it to Mexico and I was just blurting out things to do/not do like I had been there before. He would look at me and smile and each time I would end it by saying "It's in my tour book". We would both laugh.
Despite the recent publication date I found that nearly all the information was outdated. Pretty disappointing and I wish I would have purchased a different book.
This has been getting us ready for our trip to Mexico in a few weeks. We are getting ideas and information on the areas we will be staying in and place of interest have been written down so that we can explore. Sure wish there was a way to mark a chapter/page like a paper version so that we can have a quick reference ... such as a restaurant or place of interest that has peaked our interest.
This book was ok for getting general background before our trip and then as a reference from time to time during our trip. The history anc culture sections were good. I pay no attention to the hotel and restaurant recommendations or any opening times, etc.. I see we actually ate twice at one of the recommended restaurants in the Hotel Zone of Cancun, but we went there because we saw the place and checked out reviews on Trip Advisor. I am glad I got the book, but it is ok, not fantastic.
I liked the guide and it provided some good basic info for a first-time trip. As expected it’s a bit commercial highlighting big name attractions like Xcaret park and such that may not be suitable for all travelers. I recommend waiting until you arrive at your resort or hotel before booking any tours as the locals can better guide you on what’s important to see and do and can also help you with discounts.
Although Fodor's Travel guides were once a trusted brand, I no longer feel that way. Many of the recommendations were VERY outdated, even though I bought this "revised" version. Shame on you, Fodor's! You need to do your homework.
I've never posted an Amazon review. I've also never purchased a Fodor's guide (usually Lonely Planet or Rick Steves). I bought this book because of its recent publication date, but it really was the worst guidebook I've ever purchased. You can pretty much correlate the expense of anything with the rating. And I agree that there is far too much on the parts you don't use a ton (like lodging, which is frequently pre-booked) compared to information about things to do, places, to go, history, etc.
