WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • THE EMMY AWARD–WINNING HBO MINISERIES STARRING FRANCES MCDORMAND, RICHARD JENKINS, AND BILL MURRAYIn a voice more powerful and compassionate than ever before, New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Strout binds together thirteen rich, luminous narratives into a book with the heft of a novel, through the presence of one larger-than-life, unforgettable character: Olive Kitteridge. At the edge of the continent, Crosby, Maine, may seem like nowhere, but seen through this brilliant writer’s eyes, it’s in essence the whole world, and the lives that are lived there are filled with all of the grand human drama–desire, despair, jealousy, hope, and love. At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance: a former student who has lost the will to live: Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse. As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life–sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition–its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires.NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY People • USA Today • The Atlantic • The Washington Post Book World • Seattle Post-Intelligencer • Entertainment Weekly • The Christian Science Monitor • San Francisco Chronicle • Salon • San Antonio Express-News • Chicago Tribune • The Wall Street Journal   “Perceptive, deeply empathetic . . . At over 1,500 reviews, I know my review won't make a difference, but I just wrote a negative review, so I felt the need to balance things out. I'll make this brief. This is one of the most outstanding novels I've ever read. I normally don't reread books, but this one will be the exception. Stout tells small stories about small people, in a small town, but none of this is small, because Stout reveals that all of our stories--and yes this is an every person type of book, are beautiful. Stout's empathetic authorial voice is beautiful. Beautiful is a word I use over and over describing this book. Her use of language is heart bracingly beautiful to the point where sometimes I had to put the book down just to absorb the profound pathos she describes.I promised a short review, so I will conclude by saying my life has been enriched by reading this novel.

In a series of thirteen vignettes, author Elizabeth Strout sets out to illuminate a small town in coastal Maine and one of its inhabitants, a retired schoolteacher named Olive Kitteridge.Readers are the voyeurs in Olive Kitteridge. While we peep into the lives of a piano player in a lounge, a troubled teenage girl, and Olive's own husband and son (among others), we see people dealing with all sorts of problems... and we see that Olive is-- for the most part-- considered to be a rather unpleasant and unpredictable force of nature. But as our knowledge of the people of Crosby, Maine increases so does Olive's self-awareness. The lessons she learns are sometimes painful and always ruthlessly honest.I loved how my understanding of the characters deepened with each new chapter. Initially seen in an unflattering light, some characters changed as the light shone upon them from different angles. This is a little gem, although I can see some readers believing that nothing ever happens in it. I found this book to be mesmerizing and to contain one brilliant character study after another. Quiet, unassuming writing can sometimes wield great power and beauty, and this is exactly what I found in the pages of Olive Kitteridge.

These 13 stories revolving around a small group of people living in a coastal Maine town is deeply moving and thought provoking. Psychological snapshots of the moments of our lives. These tales are finely wrought and expertly honed into little gems of introspection. The stories all involve the central character, Olive Kitteridge, in one way or another - each told from the perspective of either Olive or one of the townspeople. Each gives us an insight - a small glimpse through a lighted window - into a life of one of these townsfolk. Brilliantly crafted and stunning in their ability to expose deep feelings of love, loss, abandonment and the complexity of life, the scope and breadth of this novel is far greater than the sum of its 13 parts. Well worth a read and some reflection.

Olive Kitteridge's story is one of the best portrayed narratives of the human condition. Olive is the common thread that holds the stories of other families together throughout this compilation of events in the lives of country folk in small town America. I found the book difficult to put down.Olive is a rather eccentric individual, and not the most likable person in the world, but there is something about her that unites her with others in her small community. The individual stories of Olive's acquaintances are varied, and many times heart wrenching, but each story shares common ground with each of us.I highly recommend this book if you enjoy reading about ordinary human beings and the struggles we encounter. Personally, I loved the book!

After my third reading of OLIVE KITTERIDGE, I am still unable to write a conventional review. Elizabeth Strout writes almost poetically about everyday people, who live in a small Maine town. Her attention to detail, whether it be the way the sun’s rays strike a table or the description of a woman’s dress, astonishes me. The characters are so complete, so extraordinary, yet so ordinary. Elizabeth Strout’s narrative and dialogue flows naturally; this is the way we actually converse, I kept thinking. And how I love quirky Olive, who makes an appearance at the most unexpected times.I suspect that this is not a book that will satisfy everyone. There is not really a plot, a start and an ending. Instead, I read a book that enriched and inspired me. Olive, I shall return!

Olive Kitteridge is not quite a novel and not quite a collection of short stories. It is more like a series of vignettes about people and events in a town in Maine. Some of these vignettes focus on Olive Kitteridge and others barely mention her, but as we read them, we learn more about Olive and how she affects others, particularly family members and how they affect her. We see how some events in her life affected her character. We also see how she changes over time.Olive often seemed like a mean person and she didn't apologize when she hurt others. Yet she often felt hurt by the very people she had hurt. She showed a lack of empathy much of the time. Underneath her hard shell, she had a softness that she rarely revealed to others. For example, she deeply loved her son, but she was often angry with him for normal behaviors and hurt him. She misinterpreted others intentions and behaviors all too often. If you need to like the main character of books that you read, you may well not like this book. However, if you like to read about character development and the interactions of imperfect people, you may love it.
